Volunteer days on the Flower Farm!

Cultivation Specialist Job Description

Reports to:         Malaika Bishop, farm owner  

Job status:          Full time seasonal hourly employee

Location:             11153 Cement Hill Rd. Nevada City CA 95959

About the Farm

Located in Nevada City, CA, Bluebird Farm was established in 2001, specializes in high quality, nutrient dense, greens, culinary herbs, microgreens, floral design and fresh seasonal flowers. We are dedicated to using organic and sustainable growing methods to enhance the health of our land, build rich soil and provide the most delicious and beautiful food and flowers possible. We grow on 1.3 acres and sell to schools, through veggie and flower shares, to food hubs, restaurants, grocery stores, and direct to customers.

Summary of Position

We are looking for someone who is experienced, thorough, quick and loves the satisfaction of a well-weeded bed of plants. This is a low stress, meditative job with the reward of seeing tangibly what you accomplished that day toward beautifying the farm. This 2 day a week position will focus entirely on cultivating with hand tools, hand weeding, mulching and occasional mowing from June 1st- Oct 31st. We are more caught up this season on weeding than ever before and we want to keep it that way with a dedicated person focused on only that.  We generally work 8-4 or 7-3 in the hotter part of the year. Days of the week are flexible.

Farm Work

  • Cultivating beds with hand tools
  • Hand weeding
  • Mulching
  • Mowing and/or weed eating farm paths and edges.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Farm scale hand cultivation experience.
  • A love for weeding!
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong pace and work ethic.
  • Can work outside and adapt to variable weather conditions and has physical stamina.
  • Can bend, squat, kneel, lift equipment and materials necessary to complete farm tasks and activities
  • Doesn’t mind working alone.

Hours: 16 hours a week June 1st to Oct 31st

Compensation: Employee is non-exempt. $17/hour

Harvest Specialist Job Description

We are looking for someone who is experienced, thorough, quick and loves to harvest, wash, pack and deliver produce and flowers. This position will support our existing farm crew on Wednesdays harvest and get our orders out the door on our biggest delivery day of the week. This position will also support with our Collaborative CSA box pack.  June 1st- Oct 31st.  Hours are: 7-3 in the hotter part of the year.

Farm Work

  • Harvest flowers, veggies, herbs, for our various markets.
  • Wash and pack produce into bins
  • Deliver and help with Collaborative CSA box pack.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to count and measure accurately.
  • Strong pace and work ethic.
  • Can work outside and adapt to variable weather conditions and has physical stamina.
  • Can bend, squat, kneel, lift equipment and materials necessary to complete farm tasks and activities
  • Familiarity with veggies and flower varieties a plus.

Hours: 8 hours a week June 1st to Oct 31st

Compensation: Employee is non-exempt. $17/hour
